Money and the Church

A Biblical and Practical way
to support God's Work

1) You don't have to be a member to give.

2) If you are an active member of another church, you should support them first.

3) You aren't paying for services rendered. An offering is a gift in response to God's love.

4) If you cannot give much financially, there are many other ways to support the church. The church needs more than money to do ministry. Basic services, both skilled and unskilled, are always necessary. If you are gifted in areas like construction, finance, computers, planning or education - it can help meet a need and save the congregation money.

5) The word "tithe," refers to the Biblical teaching of giving 10% of your income to God. The term "offerings" were gifts above and beyond the tithe. The Bible also uses the term "firstfruit" giving. What it all comes down to is that giving is not an afterthought, but an expected and intentional response to God and His love.

6) Because the decision is spiritual and physical, we encourage you to pray and decide how much of your income you can afford to give to all the charities that are important to you (the church, alumni associations, Red Cross, etc.) Then decide how much you are going to give to each group. By deciding ahead of time, it makes it easier to manage your charitable giving and finances.

7) We also highly recommend you thoroughly check each organization before you give. Your gifts should be given to organizations you are passionate about and those who are responsible with your gift. By managing your gifts, you can do the most good with whatever you give. You might consider checking out: www.charitynavigator.org.
